George K. Merijohn DDS
Passionately focused on the advancement of the dental profession and improvement of patient care outcomes, Dr. Merijohn is distinguished as a thought leader in the implementation of the Evidence-Based approach to dental care. By providing professional consultancy and advisory services, teaching and education, research, and development of knowledge tools for Clinical Decision Support, he is actively involved in the dental profession.
Dr. Merijohn maintained his private peridontal practice from 1981 to 2009 in downtown San Francisco, California, where he pioneered and refined minimally invasive periodontal surgical procedures designed to maximize patient safety, minimize pain and optimize treatment value. Recognized as one of clinical dentistry's earliest adopters of the Evidence-Based approach to care in the private practice setting, he developed therapeutic protocols and decision sets based on its integration with the core philosophy of the Precautionary Principle and classical Principles of Ethics.
Dr. Merijohn was recruited by the American Dental Association in 2006 to assist in their efforts to develop and teach advanced training programs for dentists in evidence-based dentistry and was elected to the editorial board of the The Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, where he continues to serve. Dr. Merijohn authors articles for peer-reviewed dental journals and lectures on his areas of expertise. He founded and continues to lead Evidence-Based Dentistry study clubs for practicing dentists.
Dr. Merijohn's interests in dental innovation and education date back to the early 1980's when he developed and published the PerioAccess® Clinical Decision making and Record Keeping System and co-authored the textbook Decision Making in Periodontology. Currently, he is Assistant Clinical Professor, University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry, Department of Orofacial Sciences and has served as Associate Clinical Professor at the University of the Pacific College of Dentistry.
Dr. Merijohn earned his dental degree, summa cum laude, in 1979 from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and received his certificate in periodontics in 1981 from the University of Washington.
Dr Merijohn resides with his wife Susie in San Francisco and in Whistler, British Columbia.
